I also flew Syrian Arab airlines to India (2004?) and a 3rd vote for the cabin crew

I used to smoke in those days and if you stood at the back of the plane where they stored the food and drinks you could have a smoke with the staff

If you had a quick fag. In the bog all they said was "you shouldn't do that"

Sadly I haven't - my money is on Colchester Sid or Danish Hammer.

It's really disappointing that there's a chance it'll never be safe enough to visit properly - same as Iraq. That makes me feel cheated out of a real experience, Iraq particularly.

Yes - stayed with a friend who was learning Arabic there for 9 days.

It's an amazing country - Palmyra was in particular gorgeous, but also Bosra and crac des chevalier were stunning. Damascus itself had a real energy to it - the souks were quite an experience. I even tried out a hammam there... it has/had a large Christian population and parts of the city which were a life-saver as we were there during Ramadan.

We went on a day trip to Ammam, required bribing the border guards, which was surreal.

I also flew on Syrian Arab Airlines to India, back in the 80s, and fully endorse your opinion of their cabin crew. Absolute stunners.

Re: Anyone been to Syria before the troubles?
Never been, but the first time I went to India was on Syrian Arab Airlines in 1997.

All I can say is that the stewardesses were gorgeous dark haired stunners who looked like they could belly dance my balls off, and it all seemed very secular and open, the way they were dressed and talked to you. It was a brief time it would have been a beautiful place to go on holiday.

Jordan was the same. Tourist trade just starting to take off when some nutter fired a shell or two into Israel from near the border and Israel responded by bombing the airport and infrastructure back into the stone age.

Shame, as we've missed out on some brilliant beaches and belly dances.

Re: Anyone been to Syria before the troubles?
I was talking to a Christian Assyrian from Iraq who was telling me how beautiful Iraq and Syria were. They were forced out by Muslim crazies even before ISIS.

I'd love to travel there some day although I'm not sure it'll ever be safe in our lifetime. I've traveled through Oman twice and was blown away by the beauty of the desert mountains there.
